The hustle and bustle, but now what?
I made it! I’m at the point in my career where I feel successful. I worked on some incredible projects with Cherie Enns Consulting, Save the Children, different cities in the Fraser Valley with callbacks to do more work. I have a full-time job as a Graphic Designer at a local Credit Union, doing some interesting work with some spectacular people and have a lot of fun! Everything was going swimmingly. Then two Designers at work left for a short time, and there I was alone. Fin

Time moves quickly.
Don’t worry about the details! I hear this from designers and non-designers, and I can’t get on board! Not having things line up properly as you flip through, Photoshop jobs that have white marks where the edging wasn’t done properly, it is created in the wrong program and now it has to be recreated so it can scale to a larger size, or the website doesn’t work properly on mobile! Make your assets ready for anything and know the possibilities. Look at a different lens… the vie

WordPress.com review.
I was asked to create a website with WordPress.com and I never used it before, so I wasn’t sure where everything was. I told my client who asked me to build a site with this tool, that I didn’t know this platform, but I would figure out how and on my own time. I love learning new tools, so I was totally game to make this happen! Lynda.com was an excellent resource to help me figure out where everything was. The biggest thing for me was the difference between Pages and Posts.

Push back a bit.
I’m one of those people who gets excited about a project and dives in full force. Hustle, passionate that’s my jam! I make the decision right away that we are make this happen and it is going to be incredible. But, a big BUT…. I’ve learned that I may (I can hear my husband’s voice right now) I may, need to slow down a bit. Push back! Over the last while I’ve said yes and yes to all this exciting and fantastic opportunities because they make a difference in my community and I

Nobody is perfect!
In the past year I’ve done a lot of work including infographics, illustrations, animations, posters, cards, web design and report design. Seeing it all come together is exciting! But this is art and not everyone is going to like everything you do. You may finish a project and 95% of the project was incredible and hit the mark and that other 5% fall short. Not every design will be great. Accept that you will make mistakes and do more work. Sometimes those bad ideas will lead u

Think about the bigger picture.
Here is the thing, you can’t say “YES” to everything. For me, I’ve come to terms with what I have right now and what works for my family at this time. The worst thing I would want to do is take on too much on and not do a great job for my clients. I think that is easy to do because there is so many great opportunities out there. I find once you get better and better, those referrals are going to starting coming in. It can be overwhelming! You don’t want to say “no”, but you a

Keep your clients involved.
Recently, I’ve been working on a few projects with different cities. Yes, so exciting! I love working on projects with larger organizations. There is something about the corporate feel that makes me happy! The projects lately have been similar in an idea, but I want them to be different in design! Specifically driven for that company or organization and their unique style. How do you do this? My process starts with combining both research I find online and research driven fro

You are not your work!
Criticism can be one of the hardest tools to master. Yes, it is a tool. In the beginning it is hard not to get hung up on your work. You spend countless hours learning the programs/tools/techniques and finally put it to the test and make your own creation to have someone come by and say, "that isn't working for me" try changing ...." "scrap it and start over" whatever it might be this is your master piece and they just squashed it. Heartbreaking, right!? Wrong. This is where

Typography, the heavy hitter!
Typography for me is this overwhelming idea of possibilities. When you open up your document and you are staring at a blank white page and thinking…. What font? What style of layout? How do I want this to form on the page? Are we going to add graphics? Imagery? Both? All? How are we going to simplify it to make sense to the viewer? Is this going to work in print, animation, mobile or web? All these questions? This is exciting to think about! Then it all circles back to the Ty

Do I build others dreams at the expense of my own?
As I sit here on parental leave for the moment. Realizing in a month in a half I will be sitting at my desk at work in the Corporate office at a Credit Union. Marketing, one of the most exciting departments you could work for. I sincerely enjoy the people I work with and the organizations core values. It is honestly an honour to work in the Credit Union industry as I have a passion for banking and design. It works perfectly! I can’t stop to think though…. Am I building others
